Parent-side experience: not tested — these are hardware players with no free trial, so this comparison is researched, not hands-on. Learning outcomes with children: not tested. Every figure below was checked against Yoto's and tonies' own store, help-centre and policy pages on 6 October 2026; prices change, so confirm on the store before you buy.
Yoto players play audio from cards; the Toniebox plays audio from figures, called Tonies. Below is what each brand's own pages say on the points parents usually weigh, and what we could not confirm.
Who each one suits, by criterion
No overall winner: per our methodology, each criterion is called separately.
| If you want… | Better fit | Official basis |
|---|---|---|
| A player for the youngest listeners, by official age guidance | tonies | tonies (UK): "certified safe for 1+". Yoto: "3 years and up". |
| A content subscription, by what each store sells | Yoto | Yoto Club "from £3.99/month" (UK). We found no tonies content pass. |
| A lower-cost entry player, by UK list price | tonies | Toniebox Lite £59.99 vs Yoto Mini (2024 Edition) £64.99. The Lite is brand new (UK FAQ: "available on 5th October 2026"); recheck price and stock. |
| Water resistance, by stated rating | Yoto | Yoto Mini 4th Gen: "IP67 water and dust-resistant design". We captured no water rating for tonies players. |
| A longer returns window, by region | Yoto in the UK and EU; tonies in the US | Yoto: 60 days in all three stores. tonies: 30-day guarantee (UK, EU), "100 day happiness guarantee" (US). |
| Free content beyond what you buy | Yoto, on what we could confirm | Yoto: "Free Yoto Daily and Yoto Radio", plus a free Make Your Own card. tonies' recordable Creative-Tonies are paid figures; its free-content scope outside Germany was not captured. |
| A published battery figure | Yoto | Yoto 4th Gen: "Up to 16 hrs battery life". We found no official hour figure for tonies. |
What the players cost
| Player | UK | EU / Germany | US |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yoto Player 4th Gen (pre-order, "Est. dispatch from 15 October 2026") | £119.99 | 129,99 € | $149.99 |
| Yoto Mini 4th Gen | £89.99 | 99,99 € | $109.99 |
| Yoto Player 3rd Gen | £89.99 | — | — |
| Yoto Mini (2024 Edition) | £64.99 | — | — |
| Toniebox 2 | £104.99 | €119.99 (en-eu store); 119,99 € (German store) | $129.99* |
| Toniebox Lite | £59.99 ("Toniebox Lite - Story Set") | — | $79.99* (My Story Set and Sleepy Set) |
A dash means we did not capture that price. *tonies US prices come from the store's own catalogue feed, because the US page markup carries no prices.
Free-delivery thresholds, as each store words them:
- Yoto: UK "Free delivery over £40"; EU "Free delivery over €30"; US "Free delivery over $40".
- tonies: UK "Free UK Delivery for Orders over £35"; en-eu "Free shipping for orders from €50 on"; Germany "Versandkostenfreie Lieferung ab 35 €"; US "Free shipping over $45".
What the content costs
Cards and figures are the running cost. Examples only:
| Store | Yoto cards | Tonies figures |
|---|---|---|
| UK | "Hairy Maclary Treasury" £5.99; "Bluey: The Beach and Other Stories" £9.99; "KPop Demon Hunters" £11.99 | Bluey, The Gruffalo and Ms. Rachel Tonies £14.99 each; "Multipack - Bluey, Bingo, Muffin" £39.99 |
| EU / Germany | "Bluey: The Beach and Other Stories" 12,99 € (EU) | Ms. Rachel €16.99 (en-eu); "DIKKA - Boom Schakkalakka" 16,99 € (German store) |
| US | "The Chronicles of Narnia" $59.99 | Pikachu, Ms. Rachel and Wicked Tonies $19.99 each*; "Bluey Tonies 3 Pack" $59.99* |
*From the tonies US catalogue feed.
Yoto Club
UK: "from £3.99/month. Cancel anytime" and "Try free for two weeks"; EU and US product pages: "from €4.99 a month" and "from $4.99 a month". The terms (updated 20 November 2025) list three tiers: Explorer ("access to Yoto Originals digital content only"), Collector (adds 1 Club Credit a month, or 12 a year) and Collector+ (2 a month, or 24 a year). "Most cards are priced at 1 Club Credit"; "Yoto Club Credits expire 12 months from the date they are issued."
- "To avoid being charged, please cancel at least 72 hours before your billing date."
- "After initial sign up, you can cancel your subscription for a full refund within 14 days from the date of sign up." — provided you have not used "any Club Credits or benefits ... or downloaded or streamed any Club content".
These terms are marked "(All regions except EU)"; we did not read the EU version.
tonies
We found no tonies content pass. The US store sells a figure box instead: "2 or 3 Tonies that are right for your child's age", every "1, 2, or 3 months", "Savings up to 20% off the price of individual Tonies", and "edit, skip, or cancel your subscription at any time". We found no subscription page on the UK, EU or German stores. Creative-Tonies ("90 minutes of recordable space") cost £11.99 (UK example) and $9.99 (US feed example).
Wi-Fi and offline use
Both need Wi-Fi to set up and the first time each piece of content plays.
- Yoto's help centre: "Only twice: when you first set it up, and the first time you play each card. Once a card has downloaded, it plays anywhere - car, campsite, Grandma's - no internet needed."
- tonies (UK and EU): "The Toniebox 2 will need to be connected to WiFi for set up and the first time you play a Tonie or a Tonieplay Game. Once the content has downloaded then you're good to go and don't need to be connected to play."
What does not work offline: on Yoto, "audio that needs to be streamed over Wi-Fi by nature, like radio stations and podcasts", and Yoto's holiday guide adds "Yoto Radio, Yoto Daily, podcast and radio cards, and the day-and-night clock". You also "won't be able to access your player settings whilst offline", so set the night light and volume limit beforehand. On tonies, "it is also not possible to activate new Tonies or download new content for a Creative Tonie while in Offline Mode", and app-enabled features "(e.g. Sunrise Alarm) will be deactivated".
Storage: Yoto's spec reads "64GB Storage - 1000+ hours of audio". We did not capture a tonies storage figure.
Ages, safety and battery
- Yoto: "Yoto Mini & Player are suitable for children 3 years and up. Younger children can listen too, with caregivers handling the device." Its product-safety page warns "Choking hazard. Small Parts. Not for children under 3 years of age" and "Long cord. Strangulation hazard. Not for children under 3 years of age".
- tonies: "The Toniebox 2 is certified safe for 1+ and beyond." The US page explains the cable: "A charging cable that is 22cm long is a mandatory requirement to meet child safety standards for little listeners aged 1+." Individual figures carry their own ages — The Gruffalo "Age 3+", Frozen "Age 4+".
Volume: "4th Gen Yoto Player and Mini are defaulted to ensure safe listening volumes when used with wired or Bluetooth headphones." tonies (US): "In-app volume controls let parents set volume limits right from the app"; we found no tonies statement on headphone limits.
Battery: Yoto Player 4th Gen and Mini 4th Gen are "Up to 16 hrs battery life"; the Mini (2024 Edition) "up to 14 hours of battery life*", with "Battery life varies by use, configuration and age." We found no official battery-hours figure for tonies. Its charge-time lines disagree: the EU page says "Fully charged in 2 hours with USB-C", while the German page says to connect it to the charger for "mindestens 3 Stunden" (at least 3 hours).
Apps and parental controls
The Yoto app lets you "Set times for your player's day and night clock", "Apply volume limits for your child's player and headphones", "Customise what the buttons on your player do" and "Check which cards are downloaded on your player". Yoto's privacy policy says "Orders, account creation, Yoto Space and Yoto Club membership are restricted to parents or guardians".
In the tonies app, "You can check the battery level, manage your Tonies collection and tweak settings right from your phone"; on the Lite, parents "control playback, set volume limits, and access the content library". tonies also describes a "Sleep Timer with Light and Bedtime Mode, all controllable through the app". Putting the Toniebox 2 into Offline Mode needs "Parent Access Mode", entered by turning the box upside down and long-pressing both ears.
On hardware: Yoto's Player 3rd Gen page says "No microphone. No camera. No ads."; tonies (US) says "no screens or ads".
Data and privacy terms
Yoto's privacy policy is dated "Last Updated: 20th June 2025"; tonies' says "This privacy policy was last updated in September 2025."
Yoto
- "we have minimised the amount of personal data collected from children under 18 and put you, the parent, in control."
- "we collect play logs, usage logs, and Yoto player's 'health' information (such as battery life and error logs)".
- In its marketing section: "We share your personal data with third parties to help us provide you more tailored marketing messages."
- Retention: "Information related to your Yoto account will be deleted 2 years after your account has become inactive."; "All orphaned Make Your Own (MYO) content that has not been listened to for over 3 years may be deleted at any time."; "We will delete your order information 6 years after your last order with us."
tonies
- "we only collect personal information from adult users, and do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or other age as required under applicable law) as part of our services."
- "the Toniebox transmits its individual client certificate, its (non-public) IP address and a timestamp. When you use tonies and the toniebox, we also receive usage and operating information and information about which content is currently assigned to a specific tonie."
- "Users may not upload audio of a child or other personal information that may identify a child without first obtaining the explicit consent of that child's parent or guardian."
- Retention: "We process and store your personal data only for as long as is necessary to fulfil our contractual and legal obligations."; for Creative-Tonie uploads, "Your original uploaded data will be automatically deleted after seven days."
Returns and warranty
Yoto (UK, EU and US): "you can return Yoto Players, Yoto Minis, Yoto Cards, Yoto Card Packs or Yoto supplied accessories within 60 days of purchase, for any reason." For orders from 1 October to 31 December, it is "within 60 days or by 31 January, whichever is later". But: "Opened Yoto Cards and Card Packs cannot be returned." In the UK, refunds go to the original payment method "within 7 working days of inspection", and "Original delivery charges are non-refundable, except where required by applicable law."
Yoto's Product Guarantee "covers the replacement of your Yoto product within 24 months of the delivery date" (the US wording says "of the original purchase date"), and "applies to Yoto's 4th Generation products only". Exclusions include "Natural degradation of battery performance over time."
tonies: "30-day guarantee - happy kids or full refund" (UK), "30 days happiness guarantee" (EU), "30 Tage Rückgaberecht" (Germany) and "100 day happiness guarantee" (US). The UK store states "a 2-year warranty"; we did not capture warranty terms for the EU, German or US stores, nor tonies' refund timing or return-shipping terms.
Regional notes
- Yoto runs separate UK, EU and US stores. A Bluey card page whose address ends "uk-eu" exists on the UK and EU stores but not the US store; Yoto gives no explanation.
- The tonies US catalogue includes Spanish-language figures, for example "Sesame Street: Abby Cadabby Tonie (en Español)".
- The German tonies store lists German-language titles; the en-eu store is in English.
- Yoto's EU store offers a language selector with English and French.
We found no official statement from either brand that its UK and US English catalogues differ.
What we could not verify
- tonies battery life in hours, tonies headphone volume limits and tonies small-parts wording.
- tonies warranty terms outside the UK, and tonies refund timing and return-shipping terms.
- Any tonies subscription on the UK, EU or German stores, and tonies' free-content scope outside Germany.
- Yoto Club terms for the EU, and Yoto's repair and recall details.
- Whether either app is strictly required for set-up, and any "content lock" feature on either brand.
- Player-plus-content bundle prices beyond those listed, and any official statement on UK-English vs US-English catalogues.
- tonies US prices on the rendered storefront (we used the store's catalogue feed).
What other parents report
These are individual opinions posted on Reddit, quoted as written; they are not findings and we have not verified them.
- On UK families, one parent wrote: "Yoto is a British company and the majority of the cards we have are British English." (r/UKParenting (opens in a new tab)). Neither brand confirms a UK/US catalogue difference.
- On longevity, one parent wrote: "Yoto has a lot of content for more ages, so more long-term use." (r/toddlers (opens in a new tab)).
- On Wi-Fi, one parent wrote: "connected to the internet only when initially downloading a newly received card." (r/Mommit (opens in a new tab)). That is consistent with Yoto's help-centre wording above.
Where to buy
Both brands sell direct. Check the current price, delivery threshold and returns terms for your country before ordering.
